Sharks topple Tigers
23/12/2007
Sale have leaped above Leicester in the Guinness Premiership after a 20-14 win over the Tigers at Edgeley Park.
The Sharks, who led 14-8 at the break, were led to victory by a try from Rory Lamont and four penalties from Charlie Hodgson.
The Tigers crossed the line through Geordan Murphy while Andy Goode slotted over three penalties.
The win for the Sharks sees them climb into fourth place while Leicester slip to fifth spot.
Elsewhere the boot of Jonny Wilkinson was not enough to prevent Newcastle losing 13-20 to leaders Gloucester at Kingston Park.
The England fly-half kicked two penalties and a conversion for the Falcons after Geoff Parling had touched down.
But Gloucester, who led 14-10 at the break, clinched victory thanks to Iain Balshaw and Olivier Azam crashing over. Ryan Lamb kicked two conversions and two penalties for the Kingsholm side.
The win for Gloucester moves them clear of Bristol at the top of the table while the Falcons remain in ninth position.
Meanwhile London Irish beat Worcester 23-16 at the Madejski Stadium.
The Exiles, who led 10-6 at half-time, touched down twice through David Paice and Sailosi Tagicakibau. Deon Armitage booted over three penalties and two conversions.
Worcester scored a try through Sam Tuitupou while Shane Drahm kicked over the conversion along with three penalties.
The result sees the Exiles climb one place to seventh while Worcester remain rock-bottom.
