Spies out of World Cup
31/07/2007
South Africa back-row forward Pierre Spies has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup, which begins in September, after scans revealed clots in his lungs.
The number eight, who was in contention to start for the Springboks at the tournament in France, may be ruled out of any form of contact sport for up to eight months.
Team doctor Yusuf Hassan confirmed that he would be "treated and monitored over the next couple of months".
And Spies himself was philosophical about being forced to miss the competition.
"It would have been great to be in France, but I must accept that it is good that they diagnosed the problem much earlier," the 22-year-old said.
"Matters could have been worse had I continued playing. I wish the team all the best in France, and am also looking forward to playing for the Springboks again in the near future."
Head coach Jake White said Spies' absence would be "a huge loss for the team".
"He is such a great player who would have played a huge role in our campaign in France," he said.
"It would have been fascinating to see him in action with the likes of [young flanker] Schalk Burger at the World Cup."
Spies will be replaced in the 30-man squad by hooker Bismarck du Plessis in preparation for travelling to Europe next month.
