Strettle out of first Test
24/05/2007
Harlequins winger David Strettle has been ruled out of England's first Test against South Africa on Saturday.
The 23-year-old is suffering from the gastric virus sweeping the squad this week and the rumours are that Strettle could be one of several absentees for Saturday.
Strettle will be replaced on the wing by Gloucester's Iain Balshaw, who was originally named among the replacements for the Bloemfontein Test.
"David's vomiting continued through yesterday and he was unable to take fluids by mouth. He was therefore admitted to a local hospital for rehydration and monitoring," England team doctor Simon Kemp said.
"And while he has made good progress overnight, he will not be fit to play on Saturday."
England head coach Brian Ashton said: "I obviously feel for David as it is his first tour, but Iain is an experienced player and will do a good job for us."
A large proportion of England's touring party have been struck down by the virus since arriving in South Africa last week.
Centre Andy Farrell has been rested from training today although he is still expected to play.
Jonny Wilkinson returned to training yesterday after sitting out sessions in the early part of the week, although James Simpson-Daniel joined Strettle on the sidelines on Wednesday.
