Thompson out of World Cup
21/02/2007
Northampton Saints and England hooker Steve Thompson has been ruled out of the remainder of this season and the World Cup later this year after being advised to undergo surgery.
The front-row forward last played professional rugby on January 21st before being advised to take complete rest to repair damage to his neck.
However this rest period, which has seen him miss England's first two matches in the Six Nations championship, has not improved Thompson's condition and he will now be forced to have surgery.
"We are all so disappointed for Steve and we will be working hard with him to help his recovery," said Northampton head coach Paul Grayson.
"We look forward to his invaluable support behind the scenes while he recuperates."
The rugby union World Cup begins in early September and England will face the United States, Tonga and South Africa in their group as they begin their quest to defend the Webb Ellis Trophy.
Thompson's absence will be a blow to the side but will open the door for World Cup hopefuls such as George Chuter to secure a regular starting berth.
The Leicester Tigers hooker has been solid while standing in for Thompson in this year's Six Nations so far.
