Tigers maul Edinburgh

17/11/2007

Leicester's new coach Marcelo Loffreda was handed a leisurely introduction to life at Welford Road as his side dispatched Edinburgh 39-0 in their Heineken Cup clash.

The home side scored five tries, courtesy of Andy Goode, Tom Varndell, Geordan Murphy, Martin Corry and a penalty award from the referee, as they comfortably claimed a winning bonus point.

Goode, sporting an impressive fundraising moustache, also struck two penalties and four conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking over and claim the personal landmark of Leicester's all-time leading competition points scorer.

Elsewhere Saracens lost out by a single point as Biarritz triumphed 22-21 in southern France.

The Guinness Premiership outfit had a 14-9 half-time lead and seemed to be heading for a memorable win after Andy Farrell's second-half try.

However Dimitri Yachvili's excellent place kicking kept the hosts in touch before the French international landed his fifth successful penalty attempt in injury time to steal the win.

In the first of three Anglo-Welsh clashes in the tournament today, London Irish breezed to a 45-17 win away to Newport-Gwent Dragons as Tomas De Vedia and Delon Armitage crossed for two tries each.

However Harlequins and Cardiff Blues produced a more evenly-matched affair as they drew 13-13 at the Stoop.

England international Nick Easter scored for the home team on the brink of half time before Jason Spice dived over towards the end to briefly give the Welsh side hope of victory. ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18359690-ADNFCR
