Ulster maintain pressure on Leinster
14/04/2007
Ulster maintained the pressure on Leinster at the top of the Magners League with a comprehensive 33-9 win over the Borders Reivers at Netherdale.
The home fans came out in protest about the Scottish Rugby Union's decision to disband the team at the end of the season because of financial difficulties but still saw their side well beaten.
Stephen Ferris scored after four minutes to put Ulster in front before Steve Jones and David Humphreys exchanged penalties to give the visitors a 13-6 half-time advantage.
Reivers dominated the second period but could only manage one penalty for their efforts.
Humphreys grabbed another three pointer himself before Andy Maxwell and Bryn Cunningham crossed the whitewash in the dying minutes to give the scoreline a flattering look.
The defending champions are still just five points behind league leaders Leinster after the Dubliners snatched a 23-22 win over the Dragons at Rodney Parade.
Steve Jones and Adam Black scored tries to give the Dragons an early lead but Brian Blaney responded for Leinster to make it 15-10 at the break.
Blaney and Paul Emerick were then sin-binned in the second half but Leinster kept themselves in it thanks to the boot of Felipe Contepomi.
When Ian Gough and Ceri Sweeney were also sin-binned late in the game for the Dragons Leinster made their numerical advantage pay and Chris Whitaker scored the winning try.
Black scored his second try before the final whistle but it was to no avail for the Dragons who saw their ten game winning streak come to an end.
Elsewhere Glasgow Warriors travelled to Connacht and won comfortably 40-23.
