Voyce to miss Premiership final after shoulder op
21/05/2008
Wasps winger Tom Voyce has been ruled out of the Guinness Premiership final next week after having surgery on his dislocated shoulder.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury to his left shoulder during the Premiership playoff semi-final against Bath on Sunday.
Scans earlier this week had been inconclusive over whether Voyce would require an operation on the injury.
However, after consultation with a specialist it was decided the England back would need to go under the knife with a view to his long-term fitness and will focus on getting fit in time for next season rather than the showpiece final at Twickenham on May 31st.
"Following an MRI scan on Monday, London Wasps' winger Tom Voyce underwent examination yesterday (Tuesday) by a specialist consultant on the left shoulder he dislocated in Wasps' Guinness Premiership semi-final against Bath on Sunday," a statement from the club revealed.
"Voyce will have surgery today (Wednesday) to stabilise the shoulder joint.
"Following surgery, Voyce will complete a rehabilitation programme expected to last three months. His rehab will focus on recovering full fitness for the start of the 2008/09 season."
Voyce was one of two key men injured for Wasps in last weekend's match, after England fly-half Danny Cipriani suffered a fractured dislocation of his right ankle.
Cipriani, who was expected to be a lynchpin of the international side travelling to New Zealand this summer, is said to be "comfortable" after being discharged from hospital yesterday.
He underwent an operation on Sunday, which the club said "went exceptionally well", and is expected to return to action before the end of 2008.
