Wales to discover extent of Jones' injury

29/07/2007

Wales will discover the full extent of captain Stephen Jones' pelvic injury after a scan on Monday.

He will likely miss the Test against England at Twickenham on August 4th and may well be out of the other two August games.

Jones was injured in a warm-up game after a training camp in Brittany. He had been in competition with James Hook for the fly-half position.

Hook was the star of Wales' victory over England in the Six Nations after he came on for the injured Scarlets player.

Winger Shane Williams is also set to miss all the August Tests and, worryingly for the players, the England game is the last before coach Gareth Jenkins has to cut his squad down to the final 30 for the World Cup.

Wales will play Argentina on August 18th and France on the 26th, but squads must be submitted by August 14th.

"We want to grow our performances and combinations and Stephen would have played against England if he was fit," Jenkins told the BBC.

"We've got five matches before the big World Cup clash against Australia, and we need to give as much game-time as possible to the players who will be involved in that."

Wales' opening World Cup match will be against Canada on September 9th at La Beaujoire Stadium, Nantes.
