Wallabies thump Wales
02/06/2007
Australia beat Wales comfortably 31-0 in the second Test at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium as the visitors failed to repeat their heroics from last week.
The Wallabies ran in three tries without reply as Digby Ioane capped his debut with one of the scores for the home side.
Wales competed well in the first half and were able to spoil at the breakdowns to halt the Aussies' progress.
Stirling Mortlock slotted over two penalties in the first 20 minutes before Welsh winger Chris Czekaj was taken off the field with a broken leg soon followed by centre Jamie Robinson who was replaced by Ceri Sweeney.
Veteran scrum-half George Gregan came on for the Aussies at half-time and that allowed Matt Giteau to move into the centre, this change seemed to work as the Wallaby backs clicked into gear.
Mortlock added another penalty before Ioane scored his try just after the break as an attempted interception by a Welsh defender failed and gifted him the score.
Australian winger Drew Mitchell showed the Welsh defence a clean pair of heels as he sprinted away for the second try of the half on the hour mark.
Mortlock added the conversion to take his tally to 14 points before Julian Huxley capped the rout with a chip over the defence to score.
Welsh back-row forward Colin Charvis came close to scoring at the end of the game but the referee deemed the ball had been held-up over the line.
