Wasps keep title challenge alive with victory over Saracens

20/04/2008

Wasps kept their Guinness Premiership title hopes alive with a 40-29 win over Saracens at Vicarage Road.

The visitors led 35-12 at the break thanks to tries from Raphael Ibanez, Tom Voyce, Paul Sackey, and a brace from Dominic Waldouck while Danny Cipriani slotted over all five conversions.

Saracens kept themselves in the game with two tries from Francisco Leonelli and a conversion from Glen Jackson.

The home side mounted a comeback in the second half with Leonelli grabbing another try while Richard Haughton and Neil de Kock crashed over.

But Eoin Reddan's try increased Wasps' advantage and they held on for victory, which moves them into third place while Saracens remain in eighth spot.

Elsewhere, Sale scored six tries to thump Newcastle 53-10 at Edgeley Park.

The Sharks led 17-0 at the break thanks to a penalty try, and Selorm Kuadey and Chris Bell crossing the line, with Charlie Hodgson booting over a conversion.

Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe led a second-half onslaught with a brace while Will Cliff, Ben Foden, and Mike Hills also touched down. Hodgson kicked over another conversion and a penalty while Lee Thomas booted over three conversions for the Sharks.

The crushing win for the Sharks sees them climb into fifth position while the Falcons remain in tenth place.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18559394-ADNFCR
