Wasps stun Bristol

04/03/2007

Wasps have thumped high-flyers Bristol 28-0 in the Guinness Premiership at the Causeway Stadium.

The hosts crossed the line three times through Josh Lewsey, Eoin Reddan and David Doherty.

Marc van Gisbergen kicked a conversion and two penalties for Wasps but the win was marred by England prop Phil Vickery being brought off on 68 minutes with suspected concussion.

After dominating the early exchanges, Wasps led 3-0 after 30 minutes after an Alex King penalty before tries from Josh Lewsey and Eoin Reddan gave them into a 15-0 lead at the break.

Two penalties from Van Gisbergen penalties increased Wasps' lead before David Doherty crossed the line to seal the rout.

The result sees fourth-placed Wasps close the gap on the early pace-setters while Bristol miss the chance to pile on the pressure on leaders Leicester.

Elsewhere, Saracens extended their unbeaten run to four games after beating reigning champions Sale 22-9 at Vicarage Road.

Centre Adam Powell crossed the line on 18 minutes for the hosts for the game's only try.

Fly half Glen Jackson capped off a perfect display with the boot by kicking the conversion along with five goals.

England international Andy Farrell withdrew before kick-off through injury.

The struggling Sharks, who have now lost their last three games, were led by a penalty from Rhys Jones and a brace from Lee Thomas.

Saracens consolidate fifth place with today's victory while the Sharks remain in eighth spot, 22 points behind leaders Leicester.
