Wilko cagey on Falcons future

12/12/2007

Jonny Wilkinson has remained tight-lipped on the prospects of him leaving Newcastle Falcons when his contract with the club expires next year.

The England international has been the subject of intense speculation in recent days following the departure of long-term fitness coach Steve Black from the Kingston Park staff.

Some reports suggested Wilkinson, who played a large part in England's run to the final of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, could seek a move to France to join a club with a more realistic chance of success in domestic or European club rugby.

The 28-year-old told BBC Radio Five Live "it doesn't work as simply as that", but refused to be drawn further on his future.

"I've always been so, so happy at Newcastle - because I've always felt it is somewhere for me to get better and develop and to make things happen," he continued.

"I've always assessed everything and I will do exactly the same thing - and I'm sure the club will do exactly the same thing - this year."

One thing Wilkinson was certain of was his relationship with Black, who quit Falcons earlier this week.

Black has worked with the talented half-back for several years and was a key part of the player's recovery programme during his injury-ravaged four years between the World Cups of 2003 and 2007.

"He's been there from day dot - we've always worked together," Wilkinson said.

"It's a relationship that will never stop. In my opinion, he's the best at what he does by a country mile and he adds so much to everyone he works with.

"In professional sport he's the closest person I've got and he's everything to me.

"He's a guy who I'd go to with advice about everything. He's a person who helps me grow as an individual and helps me understand things.

"He will always have the same part in my life, wherever he is."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18392390-ADNFCR
