Worcester fall to Tigers
17/02/2007
The Guinness Premiership's bottom club Worcester Warriors finally succumbed 13-6 to leaders Leicester at Sixways Stadium.
The storm over the participation of England players in the weekend's games had largely passed the Tigers by and they left Harry Ellis on the bench while Martin Corry, George Chuter and Louis Deacon were excluded from the squad entirely.
It was a move that nearly backfired on the visitors as they were forced into a sustained rearguard action to protect a lead established through Seru Rabeni's try after 12 minutes.
Worcester full-back Shane Drahm ate into the deficit with a pair of penalty kicks, but just as it looked like as if his side would head for the dressing rooms within a point of their opponents, Ian Humphreys landed a shot at goal to give Leicester breathing space at 10-6.
In an error-strewn second period the only points came from a penalty from Humphreys.
But as the end approached Leicester's inability to land a killer blow seemed close to costing them as Worcester camped on their line in search on a converted try that would draw them level, but the away defence held out to protect a crucial victory.
Elsewhere Northampton's dismal season continued as the return of talismanic full-back Bruce Reihana brought only a 28-15 home defeat at the hands of Harlequins.
London Irish won out 15-7 in a closely-contested game against Bath at the Madejski Stadium.
The home side strolled into a 15-0 lead through tries from Topsy Ojo and Sailosi Tagicakibau inside the first 25 minutes, but Bath briefly threatened to make it uncomfortable viewing for the Exiles' fans with a Danny Grewcock try 14 minutes from time.
