Robson takes title
05/07/2008
14-year old Laura Robson became the first Briton since Annabel Croft in 1984 to win the Wimbledon girls title in front of a packed and jubilant Court One.
Londoner Robson overcame Thai third seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 6-3 3-6 6-1 to earn the title and confirm her reputation as Britains most exciting young tennis hopeful.
After defeating an opponent two years her senior Robson joked that Venus Williams was now in her sights.
"I will take Venus down if I play her," she joked.
Robson overcame the nerves of playing in front of the biggest crowd of her life to claim her title.
"It was so good today as all the crowd were behind me and it was an overwhelming experience," she said following the victory.
"I didn't feel relaxed and I thought I was going to be sick when I walked on court as there were so many people watching.
Robson, who was born in Australia but now lives a short stroll from the All England Club, will now be considered for a wildcard entry into next year's senior event at Wimbledon.
Robson is now 20/1 with the bookmakers to win a senior Wimbledon title before 2020.
