183 complain about EastEnders scene
19/06/2007
More than 180 people have complained to the BBC about a scene in last night's episode of EastEnders.
The broadcaster confirmed that 183 people had complained about a clip which showed pregnant Dawn Swann, played by Kara Tointon, being chained to a bed and threatened with a forced Caesarean section.
A storyline re-write had occurred involving Dawn after a planned abduction episode was scrapped in respect of the parents of the missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann.
Dr May Wright, played Amanda Drew, and her husband, played by Stuart Laing, were attempting to force the pregnant Dawn to give them her baby.
The scene was part of an ongoing love rivalry between Dr Wright, her husband and his pregnant lover.
About 9.3 million people tuned in to watch the drama unfold, although 180 of this total found it unsuitable.
A spokesman for the BBC said: "Last night's episode involving the characters Dawn, May and Rob reached a climax that most viewers would have been anticipating.
"We are sorry if some people were offended by this drama unfolding and will be addressing complaints fully in due course."
