15/02/2007

Award-winning actor Chris Langham has pleaded not guilty to child sex charges.

Langham, best known for his role in The Thick of It, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court charged with one count of serious sexual assault and eight counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16.

One of the alleged offences is believed to have taken place at a West End theatre.

The 57-year-old is also facing 15 counts of making indecent photographs of a child in 2005.

When faced with the charges he answered not guilty to each one.

Langham has previously spoken of his determination to clear his name.

As a successful British writer and comedian, his career spans the past 30 years. He was part of the original line-up for Not The Nine O'Clock News, starring alongside the then unknown comedians Rowan Atkinson and Mel Smith.

Langham wrote the BBC1 sitcom Kiss Me Kate, in which he also appeared with Amanda Holden and Caroline Quentin.

In 2006 he won the Bafta award for best comedy performance for his role in The Thick of It and he was also named as the best comedy actor at the 2005 British Comedy Awards.
