Actor John Inman died in hospital this morning, his manager has confirmed.
The 71-year-old, who was best known for his role in the 1970s cult comedy Are You Being Served? passed away at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, Phil Dale confirmed.
Mr Inman, who became synonymous with the catchphrase "I'm Free", which was much used by his character in the show, Mr Humphries, died at around 04:00 GMT.
Mr Dale said that he had been ill for some time.
Paying tribute to the actor, his manager said: "John, through his character Mr Humphries of Are You Being Served? was known and loved throughout the world."
Turning to the star's later career, he said: "He was one of the best and finest pantomime dames working to capacity audiences throughout Britain."
Mr Dale added that Mr Inman was known for his comedy plays and farces, which he said were "enjoyed from London's West End throughout the country and as far as Australia, Canada and the USA".
Inman's long-term partner, Ron Lynch, is reportedly "devastated" at the death of the star.
