BBC3 gets Greek
13/08/2007
BBC3 has acquired the UK broadcasting rights for the ABC family drama Greek, which portrays US college life.
The 20-episode series is made by Disney-ABC International Television and follows young people trying to navigate the 'Greek system' of social networks.
Colleges in the US often comprise of a number of fraternities and societies which are collectively known as the Greek system.
The show follows the fortunes of Rusty, a geeky kid who fancies exploring these social wigwams rather than burying his head in books.
However, Rusty's older sister, Casey, is already a popular and high-flying girl in the Greek system and doesn't want her younger brother spoiling her reputation.
Danny Cohen, controller of BBC3, said: "I'm delighted to have Greek as part of our BBC Three drama offering.
"It brings a very different kind of flavour to the channel, and is a further enrichment of the drama plans we're developing for the channel, including the pilots announced last month."
Jim Brehm, senior vice president of sales as Disney-ABC, added that he was "looking forward" to the BBC launch.
"Greek has created a buzz in the international TV market right from launch," he said.
The programme premiered on July 9th in the US and achieved viewing figures of 1.2 million.
