BBC One voted best channel at TV festival

26/08/2007

BBC One has won the award for the best terrestrial television channel at the Edinburgh television festival.

The channel's popular drama Dr Who also nabbed the award for best programme. The show piped E4's Skins as well as Life on Mars and Planet Earth to the prize.

The channel has faced criticism over scandals related to fixed phone-in competitions as well a trailer that showed misleading footage of the queen.

Speaking at the festival, BBC One controller Peter Fincham said he was delighted by the award adding that he was looking forward to continuing as the head of the channel.

ITV2 received the prize for best digital-only channel ahead of competitors BBC Three, BBC Four, More4, Sky One and UKTV Gold.

Awards for the best channel were decided by the festival's executive committee which consisted of 33 senior figures from TV and journalism.

The award for the best programme was decided by a group of 200 youths who picked their favourite from a shortlist.
