Barry wins Hell's Kitchen
18/09/2007
Former boxer Barry McGuigan has been declared the top chef among this season's celebrities after beating actress Adele Silva to win Hell's Kitchen.
Barry, who admitted before the series that his culinary talents were limited to beans on toast and spaghetti, said it was "fantastic" to win the crown.
The retired sportsman praised head chef Marco Pierre White for his guidance, while acknowledging the ruthlessly frank nature of the star of the show.
"The best part is learning from the great man himself. He really is phenomenal. He's a tough guy and a good teacher," Barry said.
Earlier in the evening, the 46-year-old and soap star Silva were told that they would be cooking three starters, four main courses and three puddings as part of their menus for the night.
The finalists then nominated their sacked teammates to help them serve the night's guests. Barry picked Abbey and Paul to support him while Adele chose Kelly and Brian to assist her in the service.
The pair had received praise from diners last night ahead of the public vote, with rugby star Kyran Bracken saying that their culinary skills would be welcomed at any of the city's top restaurants.
Barry, who was the bookies' favourite to win the show, edged his rival by half a point to win the task for the blue kitchen last night. The public agreed with the diners' verdicts and picked an emotional Barry as their winner.
Fellow finalist Adele congratulated Barry on his win, graciously saying that the best chef had won the show.
