Brendon Burns wins top comedy prize

26/08/2007

Australian comedian Brendon Burns has won the award for the best comedy at this year's Edinburgh Fringe festival.

The festival regular bagged the Intelligent Finance-sponsored award and an £8,000 prize for his show So I Suppose This Is Offensive Now.

Burns finished ahead of standup comedians Andrew Lawrence and Andrew Maxwell, Ivan Brackenbury and comedy troupe Pappy's Fun Club.

Awards producer Nica Burns said: "The controversial Brendon Burns' edgy and dangerous show has taken him from Edinburgh regular to this fantastic win." American actor Christian Slater presented the award at midnight yesterday.

British comedian Tom Basden won the best newcomer award for his show Won't Say Anything. His performance beat rival comedians such as Jon Richardson, Micky Flanagan and Zoe Lyons to the award.

Times’ comedy critic Dominic Maxwell, BBC radio producer Colin Anderson, comedy critics from Time Out, The Independent and the Sunday Telegraph, Joe Talbot, the director of programming of Nuts TV and Kathleen Hutchison chose the award winners.

The if.comedy Awards: a Comedy Cuts Special will be broadcast on ITV2 at 10pm today
