Chantelle and Preston split

27/06/2007

Celebrity Big Brother winner Chantelle Houghton and The Ordinary Boys singer Samuel Preston have split up.

The couple married last August after meeting in the Big Brother house and becoming engaged soon after.

In a statement released by the pair, they said: "After much soul-searching and tearful discussions we have sadly decided to end our marriage.

"We hope we can always remain friends and still love each other, but we both think we put so much pressure on one another to make our marriage work that it has ended up destroying our relationship.

"No one else is involved in our decision," the statement added.

Preston, whose band was fading somewhat before he entered the Big Brother house, has since enjoyed a rejuvenated career and newfound celebrity status while Chantelle has presented her own TV shows.

The couple added that they married too early after Big Brother but insisted they did it for the right reasons.

"We know people will think we married too quickly on the back of Big Brother, but the truth is that, what anyone thinks, we did have a whirlwind romance but we were genuinely in love," they added.

"We will never regret our time together."

Chantelle published her autobiography last year and Preston famously stormed off the set of the BBC's Never Mind the Buzzcocks after becoming angry at a joke made about his wife's book.

The Ordinary Boys are due to play a number of festivals this summer.

Chantelle entered the Big Brother house as a 'fake celebrity' and had to pretend to be part of a fictional girl band.

But her attraction to Preston was obvious and the pair became very close in the house. Preston then left his girlfriend, who he had become engaged to in the immediate aftermath of the Big Brother show, to get together with Chantelle.
