Desperate Housewives delayed
07/11/2007
Hit TV series Desperate Housewives is one of at least seven shows to be hit by the Hollywood strike, with the set targeted by picketing writers.
Production has stopped on several sitcoms including 'Til Death, Two and a Half Men and the Emmy-winning The New Adventures of Old Christine.
New Adventures star Julia Louis-Dreyfus was among the demonstrators at the Wisteria Lane set, explaining she was involved in the strike in support of her writer husband.
She told reporters: "I'm really here because I'm a union member," adding, "if we prevent them from working today, that's a small victory".
Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria handed out pizzas to strikers during a break and filming and confirmed she was backing the Writers' Guild Association's (WGA) industrial action, which stems from the writers' demand for remuneration when their work is reproduced on platforms such as DVDs, the internet and mobile phones.
"We are done, and we'll be on the lines supporting you," she commented.
"I have a whole crew that will have a terrible holiday season because there's no resolution," Longoria added.
"I care about people losing their homes, I care about my hair and makeup artists who can't make ends meet."
Some 12,000 writers are involved in the strike, the first of its kind in Hollywood since 1988.
