Diana documentary attracts criticism

28/05/2007

A documentary showing images taken moments after Princess Diana's fatal car crash in 1997 should not be shown on television, the Conservatives have said.

Channel 4 plans to broadcast Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel on June 6th, airing for the first time pictures taken by French photographers minutes after Princess Diana's car crashed early on August 31st 1997.

The programme has been criticised by Conservative shadow culture secretary Hugo Swire as being insensitive to the wishes of Princess Diana's sons, princes William and Harry.

"We would expect more from a public service broadcaster than showing sensationalist material in this way," Mr Swire said.

"It is difficult to see who will be served from broadcasting such sensational and private material."

Channel 4 has said it does not believe the images are "intrusive" and has said the public has an interest in seeing them.

The broadcaster was rapped on the knuckles by media regulator Ofcom last week over its handling of the race row on January's Celebrity Big Brother series. It will be forced to publicly apologise three times before the start of the eighth UK series of Big Brother, which begins on Wednesday.
