Doctor Who to gain new assistant
02/07/2007
Doctor Who will gain a second assistant in the new series to join Martha, played by Freema Agyeman.
Agyeman's character will also star in Torchwood, the Doctor Who spin-off show featuring John Barrowman.
The BBC's flagship show saw the conclusion of its third series on Saturday where Martha left the Doctor to care for her family and get over her crush on the timelord.
She will return for the fourth series, but not until halfway through after being involved in the early episodes of Torchwood.
Russell T Davies, executive producer and head writer of Doctor Who, said: "Series three has gained outstanding reviews and Freema has been a huge part of that success, gaining rave notices for her portrayal of Martha.
"Now we are taking the character of Martha into brand new territory with a starring role in Torchwood."
Agyeman added: "I can't wait to start filming on Torchwood and the new series of Doctor Who.
"It's a huge new challenge for me and I'm delighted Russell has decided to expand the character of Martha Jones."
The fourth series of Doctor Who, which stars David Tennant as the Doctor, will go into production this month and will feature a new assistant for the entire 13-week run.
