Emmerdale legend dies
07/09/2007
Ronald Magill, who played Amos Brearly in ITV's long-running soap, Emmerdale, has died.
A statement on the programme's official website said the actor had passed away at the age of 87.
Magill was a member of the original Emmerdale cast and played Amos for a total of 19 years before leaving in 1991.
Amos, landlord of the famous Woolpack pub, was one of the soap's best-known characters with his trademark sideburns.
Born in Hull in 1920, Magill had a successful stage career as well as his two decades working on Emmerdale.
Meanwhile, Kelvin Fletcher, who plays the show's Andy Sugden, told today's Sun newspaper that he is keen to explore new roles in the future.
The actor has just signed a new one-year contract but is keen to have a look at new projects.
"I'd like to have a go at comedy," he said.
