Falklands veteran to anchor ITV news specials

23/05/2007

Falklands war veteran Simon Weston will present a series of ITV News specials in June to mark the 25th anniversary of the conflict.

Mr Weston will anchor ITV News bulletins from the Falklands to discuss the legacy of the war with other soldiers and people caught in the middle off the war.

The programmes will be shown live from June 11th to June 14th and will include a discussion between Mr Weston and his mother, who saw her son's ship the Sir Galahad in flames after being bombed by Argentine planes.

Mr Weston suffered 46 per cent burns and has overcome his disfigurement to inspire others caught up in conflicts.

The Falklands veteran will visit the battlefield on the islands with Alan Craig, who was conscripted into the Argentine family despite his father being British.

He will also meet a family from the Falklands who were divided when one brother supported the British invasion and another supported the occupation by Argentina.

Since then, the brother who supported Argentina has been unable to return to the islands after being branded a traitor, despite having not met his grandchildren who live on the islands.
