Former Darkness frontman aims for Eurovision

28/02/2007

Justin Hawkins, former frontman of The Darkness, is one of six artists and groups who will battle it out to represent the UK at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Once used to number one success, Hawkins left the limelight after a battle with drugs addiction.

But if he wins the public vote next month then he will be heading to Helsinki later this year for all the cheesy glitz and glamour of Eurovision with the hopes of making up for the UK's shameful entry last year.

He will be joined in the duo They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To by Beverlei Brown.

Competing against him to represent the UK are former Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon, Big Brovaz, Scooch, new act Cyndi and former East 17 singer Brian Harvey.

Viewers will be able to vote for the act they think should represent them in Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up, which will be hosted by Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton and broadcast next month.

"This year hope springs eternal," Sir Terry said. "Who knows, this could be the year that the UK makes it into the top ten."

Fearne added: "It's an eclectic mix again this year so it will be anyone's guess who the public will vote for."

The Eurovision Song Contest final will be shown on BBC1 on Saturday May 12th.
