Gavin and Stacey and Harry Hill take Bafta honours

BBC3's Gavin and Stacey and Harry Hill's TV Burp were the big winners at last night's Bafta awards.

James Corden took the comedy performance award for his title role in Gavin and Stacey, a sitcom about the slowly developing romance between a Welsh girl and an Essex lad.

The show also won the popular vote with the Sky+ audience award for programmes, beating off competition from the likes of The Apprentice, Britain's Got Talent and Cranford.

Harry Hill's TV Burp also won two awards in the entertainment performance and entertainment programme categories.

In the acting stakes it was Andrew Garfield from Channel 4's Boy A and Eileen Atkins of Cranford who took the honours. Judi Dench, an Academy fellow, was nominated but did not win.

It was Bruce Forsyth's turn to be honoured for his lifetime commitment as the "ultimate all-round entertainer" to close the evening.

Heroes won the international award, ahead of Family Guy, My Name Is Earl and Californication, while Holby City beat The Bill, EastEnders and Emmerdale for the continuing drama gong.

Peep Show was judged the best sitcom while BBC1's The Street won the drama series award.
