Heroes triumphs at TCA awards

Supernatural drama Heroes triumphed at the US Television Critics Association (TCA) awards in Los Angeles.

The NBC show, which begins in the UK on BBC2 this week, was recognised as the programme of the year at the Beverley Hills event.

New Jersey gangster show The Sopranos picked up the outstanding achievement in drama TCA gong.

The recently-concluded show was represented by writer and creator David Chase, who attended the ceremony.

Also present to collect an award was Alec Baldwin, recognised for his role in the comedy 30 Rock.

Another new show, the rather grizzly Dexter, saw leading man Michael C Hall awarded the outstanding individual in a drama gong.

The US version of The Office also picked up an award for outstanding achievement in comedy.

The show follows a similar format to the UK version, written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and is shown on NBC.

BBC1's Planet Earth was one of the biggest winners, with the show scooping an award in the mini-series and news and information categories.

The career achievement award was given to Mary Tyler Moore for her work in film and TV.
