Hugh Laurie awarded OBE
24/05/2007
Hugh Laurie, star of the US medical drama House, was awarded an OBE by the Queen yesterday.
The 47-year-old actor, a long-standing member of Britain's comedy establishment, was awarded for his services to acting during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Laurie has become something of a sex symbol in America due to his most recent role as grouchy doctor Gregory House, but first found fame here in the UK alongside comedy partner Stephen Fry.
The pair, who were both members of the Cambridge Footlights comedy group while at university, launched their sketch show A Bit of Fry and Laurie in 1987 and also starred together in Jeeves and Wooster – a TV adaptation of PG Wodehouse's comic tales about a hapless young gentleman and his butler.
Laurie has also achieved success on the big screen and has notched up roles in a number of popular films including 101 Dalmations, Sense and Sensibility and Stuart Little.
The star, who recently won two Golden Globes for his role in House, is now based largely in Los Angeles because of the hit show.
Laurie's popularity now looks set to increase even further after programme producers Fox announced that the medical drama is to be screened in the exclusive slot following next year's US super bowl in February.
But despite the actor's growing popularity stateside, his old friend Fry has signalled that he would love to reunite with his former comedy partner to revive the Jeeves and Wooster characters.
Fry told the Daily Express last month: "It would be nice to see them in older years."
