Jade axed from Comic Relief
22/02/2007
Celebrity Big Brother contestant Jade Goody has been axed from the Comic Relief celebrations following the fall-out from the reality show's now infamous race row.
Goody was seen confronting fellow contestant Shilpa Shetty, the eventual winner, calling her "Shilpa Poppadom" and attracting public vitriol for her comments, along with singer Jo O'Meara and model Danielle Lloyd.
Ofcom received more than 40,000 complaints over the comments, which Goody later acknowledged could be conceived as "racist", and the furore has now prompted BBC bosses to act.
The traditional Red Nose Day telethon, which features a host of celebrities, had been scheduled to feature Goody as part of a segment involving comedians Jack Dee and Frank Skinner.
The Question of Sport-style spoof had included Goody, but producers have now signalled they will not be showing the sketch.
"Recent events have overtaken us and the show, which was recorded last November, now feels out of date," a spokesman said.
There were fears the appearance of Goody might overshadow the charitable aim of the show, which has raised more than £425 million since its inception in 1985.
Goody, meanwhile, is said to have been in rehab suffering from depression since the incident.
