Jade tells India: "I'm sorry"

27/02/2007

Jade Goody has issued a personal apology to Indian people after allegedly racist comments that she made on Celebrity Big Brother.

The reality TV star became a figure of public shame after she fell out with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty on the Channel 4 show last month.

Since then she has kept a low profile in the British media and is attempting to salvage what remains of her career.

After arriving in Delhi yesterday for a four-day 'private' visit she told reporters: "I am so sorry for the hurt and pain my actions caused."

She added that the trip is not a publicity stunt, saying "nobody knew I was coming out here".

During her time in India, Jade has been visiting underprivileged children, to whom she said she would be donating money that she had earned from Big Brother.

Her time with the children, she said, had helped her put her own problems in the UK back in perspective.

An invitation to visit Shilpa at her Mumbai home has been turned down due to charity commitments.

Since leaving the Big Brother house and being shown footage of her comments – including describing Shilpa as "Shilpa Poppadom" – Jade has denied that she is racist but admits that her behaviour was "nasty".
