Jazz singer and writer George Melly has died at his home in London, aged 80.
The legendary performer had been suffering from lung cancer and vascular dementia.
His last gig was at the 100 Club in London on June 10th in aid of Admiral Nurses, part of the For Dementia charity.
The singer developed lung cancer in 2005 but refused all treatment for the condition and continued to sing.
Melly was well-known for his colourful dress sense and had a reputation as a true performer, delighting crowds throughout his career.
He would often wear colourful suits, flamboyant hats and bright ties while singing.
The veteran jazz singer was born in 1928 and began his career in the navy after a public school education, before joining a travelling jazz group.
He began to concentrate on writing during the 1970s, but then resumed his jazz career in the 80s.
As well as singing, he was also a respected art critic and wrote about music, art and television.
Melly is survived by his wife Diana, his son Tim, his daughter Pandora, his step-daughter Candy and four grandchildren.
