John wins eviction immunity
19/11/2007
Chef John Burton Race has won immunity from the first eviction on this year's I'm A Celebrity... after winning the inaugural Bush Battle.
Along with former boyband member Jason 'J' Brown, ex-Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson and Apprentice star Katie Hopkins, John took part in the Are We Nearly There Yet? challenge, with the celebrities forced to sit in a 4 x 4 for as long as possible.
And with the heat and claustrophobia too much for the youngsters, who quit after four hours, John and Katie were left to discover who had the most mettle, with Gemma certain that the restaurateur would win through.
"He's got it in his own mind he wants to stay there all night," she said. "He's even considering pooing himself. Im not going to go as far as urinating or pooing myself on national TV. I'll draw the line there. So I think if John was willing to do that he deserves to win."
And as the six-hour mark passed, Katie could take no more, dashing off to the toilet to leave John victorious and free to escape eviction this Wednesday.
"On the morning of the first eviction I will feel content that it won't be me but then it depends on who is going to be evicted," he said afterwards.
"Once you've been in such close proximity with people, and some people I really, really like, it would hurt to say goodbye to my friends."
He added: "It was absolutely fundamental that I won this one because I don't want to leave, at all, but I certainly don't want to leave first, no one does. So by doing this and winning this it keeps me in for another day and it's just that I don't want to be the first one to be thrown out because it's somewhat of a failure and I couldn't handle it."
Meanwhile Marc Bannerman and Cerys Matthews have grown increasingly close, with Marc confiding in both J and new contestant Christopher Biggins that he fears there may be "trouble ahead".
