Katy Perry to host MTV Europe Music awards

13/10/2008

Katy Perry is to follow in the footsteps of Tom Jones and Snoop Dogg in hosting the MTV Europe Music awards.

The 23-year-old singer, who has sold more than five million copies of her single I Kissed A Girl around the world, is to make her hosting debut at the Liverpool event, it was announced on Monday.

Richard Godfrey, executive producer of this year's event, said Perry was "one of the freshest and most successful new artists to emerge on the international music scene this year".

"We want to pursue a much more informal and relaxed role for the host at this year's awards, but with a definite musical twist and we think Katy will be perfect," he added.

Perry herself is nominated for best new act and most addictive track at the 2008 event.

"To follow in the footsteps of previous hosts Christina Aguilera, Tom Jones, P Diddy and Snoop Dogg at this prestigious event is an incredible honour - do they know what they are getting into?" she joked.

"I just hope that I don't spill my cocktail!"

The 2008 MTV Europe Music awards are taking place at the Liverpool Echo Arena on November 6th, with Eighties pop star Rick Astley an unlikely nominee for the best act ever at the MTV Europe Music awards.

The Never Gonna Give You Up star is up against Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel and U2 for the historic prize.

Despite Astley's biggest hit topping the charts around the world more than 20 years ago, fans have selected him as one of the six nominees for the best act ever award, with more established artists such as the Beatles and Madonna missing out.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18823202-ADNFCR
