03/07/2007

Kylie Minogue is joining the cast of Doctor Who for a one-off Christmas special, the programme's producers have announced.

The pop princess will join the main star of the science fiction drama, David Tennant, in an episode entitled Voyage of the Damned.

Welcoming Kylie's involvement Doctor Who executive producer and lead writer, Russell T Davies, said he was "delighted and excited" the singer was joining the show's cast for the festive season.

"We feel very confident that this will be the most ambitious and best Christmas episode yet," he added.

Meanwhile Kylie, who is currently working on her tenth studio album, said it was "an incredible thrill" to be joining Doctor Who on one of his time travelling adventures.

"Doctor Who enjoys a unique history and it is going to be very exciting to be a part of that," said the singer, who started her acting career in Australian soap, Neighbours.

Filming for the Christmas special begins this month in the Welsh city of Cardiff.

Meanwhile, it was announced yesterday that Doctor Who is to gain a second assistant in the latest series of the popular show.

The time lord's existing sidekick Martha, played by Freema Agyeman, is returning for the fourth Doctor Who series but will not appear until halfway through the 13-week run due to the decision to also involve her character in the spin-off show Torchwood.
