Lee chases first number one
20/06/2007
Any Dream Will Do winner Lee Mead is only 1,500 copies behind Rihanna in the race for the number one single spot this weekend.
The West End's new Joseph has recorded the song Any Dream Will Do for Children in Need along with the track Close Every Door, also featuring fellow finalists Keith Jack and Lewis Bradley
Tickets for the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with Lee in the lead role, are selling at an amazing rate and it seems the army of Joseph fans are also keen to buy the new single.
Gennaro Castaldo, from HMV, said: "It's no surprise that Lee should be vying to top the singles charts this week when you consider the massive TV audience that tuned in regularly to watch Joseph and how dedicated the programme's fans were to its contestants.
"It follows that if people made the effort to phone in their votes, there's every chance they'd also be happy buying this song, especially as it supports Children In Need.
"Our stores are reporting that it's mainly parents coming in with their kids that are buying the single."
Rihanna has been at number one for five weeks with her song Umbrella, seeing off competition from numerous new entries.
Lee will be hoping strong trading over the weekend sees him end Rihanna's highly successful run.
