Little Britain adopted by US

13/07/2007

Little Britain creators Matt Lucas and David Walliams are to make an American version of the show, it has been announced.

Filming on the new project is due to begin in the autumn, with the six-part series set to reach US screens next year.

Pay-TV channel HBO will be broadcasting the American version of the popular BBC series, having previously adopted other British comedy hits including Ricky Gervais' show Extras and Da Ali G Show.

Commenting on the new programme, Walliams said that he and writing partner Lucas were "very keen to take Little Britain to as wide an audience as possible".

"The new series will be a sketch show set in contemporary America," he explained.

"We are taking some existing characters and writing new material for them, as well as introducing new characters and ideas."

Quite what US audiences will make of characters such as Vicky Pollard and Daffyd the "only gay in the village", if they are included in the transatlantic move, remains to be seen.

However Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, the executive producer on the new show, is confident that it will be a success in America.

"Matt and David have created something original and definitive in Little Britain. The show is an absolute smash everywhere it is seen and I am certain it is going to be loved by a US TV audience as well," he said.
