Liverpool to host MTV awards
31/10/2007
Liverpool will host next year's MTV Europe Music Awards, it has been revealed today.
The Merseyside city and home of the Beatles has been chosen as the venue for the 15th awards ceremony which takes place on November 6th next year.
Liverpool becomes the third British city to hold the event, following London in 1996 and Edinburgh in 2003.
The ceremony will coincide with the city's year as the European capital of culture.
"It is only natural that Liverpool should host the 15th annual Europe Music Awards," Richard Godfrey of MTV Networks International said.
"Not only is it the European capital of culture next year but the influence of its rich music heritage is still felt today."
This year's event is will be hosted by US rap star Snoop Dogg at OlympiaHalle in Munich and will feature Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, Mika, Avril Lavigne and Babyshambles among others.
Commenting on the decision to take the music roadshow, which is broadcast in more than 100 countries, to England's north-west, culture secretary James Purnell said it would make 2008 a memorable year for Liverpudlians.
"With its stunning back catalogue of musicians and current crop of chart toppers, Liverpool is a creative force in the world music industry," the Cabinet minister said.
"It's fantastic that MTV has chosen Liverpool to host the 2008 Europe Music Awards - this will make the European capital of culture year even more special."
The event will take place at the Echo Arena Liverpool, which is due to open next January on the city's riverfront and will be able to hold 10,600 people.
