Malfunction fails to dampen opening of Joseph
18/07/2007
A technical hitch with the stage failed to dampen the opening of night of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Critics were won over by leading man Lee Mead's performance, as the 26-year-old made his debut in a lead role since winning the BBC show Any Dream Will Do.
The gang of losing Joseph contenders were also in attendance, crowding around Lee at the closing curtain and jumping up and down.
A malfunction with the stage meant that the curtain came down for five minutes as the error was fixed, but Lee shrugged off the problem by saying: "That's theatre."
The Daily Mail said the musical would win London over and described it as "cheery, let-your-hair-down fun".
Lee was picked as Joseph by viewers of the BBC audition show in a similar manner to Andrew Lloyd Webber's previous programme How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?
The former understudy had played the role of the Pharaoh in Joseph before, but had never had a West End leading role.
Ticket sales have been impressive for the new production and demand is extremely high.
