Neighbours moves to Five
19/05/2007
Hit Australian soap Neighbours has moved to Channel Five after the BBC announced it has pulled out of the bidding war.
Five announced that it had reached a deal with the show's producers, FremantleMedia, which will see Neighbours broadcast on the digital channel Five Life in 2008.
The BBC pulled out of the running for the show after it refused to pay what it says was an asking price of about £300 million over eight years.
Lisa Opie, managing editor of content at Five, said: "I'm delighted Five has secured such a popular and sought after series.
"Neighbours is quite rightly much loved by its many fans and it will be a greatly prized part of our schedule and suitably cherished by us."
Jane Lighting, chief executive of Five, described Neighbours as a "fantastic asset" for the network's family of channels.
"It is a household brand which delivers strong audiences daily," she added.
Neighbours has been shown on BBC1 for over 20 years, showing twice a day and regularly attracting over five million viewers.
The programme has launched the careers of the likes of Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue.
