Neighbours star reveals cocaine shame
27/09/2007
Former Neighbours star Jason Donovan has revealed the cocaine addiction that almost ruined his life.
In his new autobiography, Between The Lines: My Story Uncut, the Aussie popstar explained how the deadly lure of the white line almost cost him his career - and his marriage.
"I loved my cocaine," Donovan writes. "Line after line, gram after gram, night after night until I could physically take no more and my body would simply have to shut down, to switch itself off, so that I would stop."
The former soap actor - who famously topped the UK charts with Especially for You, a classic pop duet with Kylie Minogue - has admitted that his addiction could have cost him the loss of his fiancee, Angela Malloch.
"I had fallen in love with Ange and we wanted to be together but as the months went by and I carried on like this, she simply couldn't cope," he writes, in the book's serialisation in the Daily Mirror.
Though the role is now held by reality TV show winner Lee Mead, Donovan played the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, again reaching number one in the UK charts with one of the highlights of the soundtrack, Any Dream Will Do.
