New Casualty set 100 years ago

A special three-part series of Casualty set in 1907 will be shown on BBC1 this autumn following on from the popular 1906 special.

Starring former EastEnders actress Cherie Lunghi and Sarah Smart from Five Days, the new show will take viewers to an East End hospital in the middle of a medical crisis.

The programme will be researched using case notes, ward reports, autopsy reports and diaries from doctors and nurses at the Royal London hospital in Whitechapel, thereby bringing back to life a period of the hospital's history.

During 1907, the life expectancy in the UK was just 45 and the new programme will attempt to bring this background to the fore in a dramatic setting.

Whitechapel at the time was at the mercy of gangs sniping at one another, while fears over terrorism were on the increase.

Stone City Film is behind the production, which also stars Charity Wakefield from Sense and Sensibility and William Houston from North and South.

Also featuring in the series will be Miss Marple's Tom Riley, David Troughton from Midsomer Murders and a new up-and-coming star in Alfie Allen.
