Paris backs anti-jail appeal

09/05/2007

Paris Hilton has lent her backing to an online petition asking Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, to change her 45-day jail sentence for driving on a suspended licence.

Writing on her MySpace page, the 26-year-old heiress said: "My friend Joshua started this petition, please help and sihn (sic) it. I love you all!!!!!"

The petition grandiosely claims that Paris "provides hope for young people all over the US and the world… [and] provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives".

"We, the American public who support Paris, are shocked, dismayed and appalled by how Paris has been the person to be used as an example that drunk driving is wrong," the petition adds.

"We do not support drunk driving or DUI [driving under the influence] charges. Paris should have been sober. But she shouldn't go to jail, either."

Likening Paris' status to former presidents, the petition concludes: "If the late former president Gerald Ford could find it in his heart to pardon the late former president Richard Nixon after his mistake(s), we undeniably support Paris Hilton being pardoned for her honest mistake as well."

If the attempt is not successful then Paris will see herself beginning her spell at the Century Regional Detention Facility in California on or before June 5th.
