Sopranos hope for Emmy farewell

16/09/2007

Hit US TV drama The Sopranos is favourite to scoop up the Emmys for its last ever season at this year's awards.

The mob drama wrapped up the final episode of its eight-year history earlier this summer to critical acclaim and is expected to bow out with a clutch of awards at the prestigious Primetime Emmy awards.

This year it is up for ten nominations in categories including outstanding drama series and outstanding writing, directing and acting in both male and female roles.

But it faces stiff competition from a number of other successful UT TV shows, including ABC's Ugly Betty, Heroes, the US version of The Office and West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

The Sopranos has only won the best drama statuette once before, in 2004, but experts say another win is definitely on the cards tonight.

"It still may be the frontrunner because it's the greatest TV show ever - and if any series can break the curse, The Sopranos can," the AFP news agency quoted Tom O'Neil of The Envelope website as saying.

Ryan Seacrest, frontman for American Idol, will present tonight's awards from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18281549-ADNFCR
