South Park goes digital

28/08/2007

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have signed a deal with Viacom to create a digital animation studio that will extend the show's outreach.

The offbeat cartoon will now be available online, on people's mobile telephones and games consoles.

SouthParkStudios.com will be expanded to become a major part of the digital programme and the new version of the site will be available from the first few months of next year.

An additional three series of the Emmy award-winning show have also been agreed, taking it beyond the original contract which would have expired at the end of 2008.

Under the deal Parker and Stone will continue to write, direct and edit every episode of the show until 2011 as they have done since the cult series kicked off in 1997.

"Three more years of South Park will give us the opportunity to offend that many more people," said Stone.

"And since Trey and I are in charge of the digital side of South Park, we can offend people on their cell phones, game consoles, and computers too. It's all very exciting for us."

Doug Herzog, president of MTV Networks' Entertainment Group, a division of Viacom's MTV Networks, added: "With the new partnership in South Park Digital Studios and the creation of the digital animation studio, we have a tremendous opportunity to truly maximise the potential of the franchise and the incredible creative talents of Matt and Trey across every imaginable platform."

In the past ten years South Park has become one of the most popular shows on television, drawing in over three million viewers per episode in the US.
