Strictly's Alesha gets own show
05/02/2008
Strictly Come Dancing winner Alesha Dixon has signed a new TV deal with BBC3, it has been confirmed.
The former Misteeq member will present an authored film exploring what it means to be beautiful in today's Britain, set to air in the spring.
With Alesha's dancing success having been preceded by a successful music career - and with it, the inevitable photo shoots for men's magazines - her film is to explore whether the airbrushing now commonplace in the publishing industry has a negative impact on perceptions of body image.
The documentary will examine the ways in which men are bombarded with photoshopped pin-up pictures, while young women are pressurised into measuring up to the altered images presented in the press.
Commenting on the show launch, Alesha said: "I look forward to investigating and challenging our perception of female beauty in 21st-century Britain."
"The image of the female form is becoming increasingly divorced from reality, and I want to make people aware of the pressure society is subjecting us girls to."
Danny Cohen, BBC3 controller, added: "It's great to have Alesha on BBC3. This is a subject she feels strongly about and I'm sure she will make a passionate and thought-provoking documentary."
Firecracker Films, headed by BBC executive producer Maxine Watson, commissioned the 60-minute documentary, and selected Alesha to host as she is a "bright, fresh, exciting talent, perfect for BBC3," Watson explained.
