Top Gear 'will return'
12/03/2007
Popular TV show Top Gear is set for a return to screens this summer, the BBC has insisted in the face of doubt over its future.
At the end of the show last week on BBC2 the continuity announcer said that it would be back in a few months.
But writing in his newspaper column in the Sun newspaper at the weekend, Jeremy Clarkson, one of the trio of presenters, said: "Can I just say, here and now, that it won't be."
A spokesman for the BBC has contradicted his claims, saying that it expected all of the presenters – Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May – to be onboard for future shows.
"Top Gear will be back," the BBC said. "A summer special is planned."
A new series is expected to air on TV screens this autumn, the spokesperson added.
Top Gear hit the headlines last year after Hammond was involved in a near-fatal high-speed car crash. The last episode of this series was watched by an estimated eight million people; the largest audience for the show in ten years.
