Vera to leave Coronation Street

22/07/2007

Actress Liz Dawn, who has played the popular character of Vera Duckworth in Coronation Street for 34 years, is set to leave the show due to health concerns.

Dawn, 68, suffers from emphysema, a disease affecting the lungs, and cannot continue on the ITV show. She is scheduled to leave the show before Christmas.

According to the News of the World, the actress said her time on the show had been "amazing" and the "best time of her life".

Coronation Street executive producer Kieran Roberts said: "After 34 years as Vera, Liz has taken a decision to relax and enjoy her retirement.

"We're currently devising storylines for her character's departure from Weatherfield but we would prefer not to reveal details at this moment."

Producers added that she would continue to make guest appearances on the show side-stepping speculation that she would be killed off.

"We will always miss this wonderful lady and first-rate actress and we are delighted that she's agreed to return to the soap in the future," Roberts added.

Her henpecked onscreen husband Jack, played by Bill Tarmey is to continue on the show.
